Plymouth Rock Chickens
From the very start, this breed of chicken, the Plymouth Rock chickens, are what most people imagine when they envision the standard yard bird. Standing tall and possessing all of the usual characteristics of a strong bird breed, these birds are what most refer to as ‘White Rocks”. Although these birds are difficult to trace back through the ages, in terms of lineage, one thing is for certain, and that is they are wonderful cross-breeders. What is important to realize about this breed of chicken is that if you are in the science of chicken genetic splicing, the Plymouth Rock chickens are going to be a near constant for you and your chicken lab work.
Friendly Disposition
Known for their friendly disposition, these white birds are one of the most popular in terms of being owned by chicken raisers that only want a pet, and are not in the business for meat or egg production. A prodigiously free-ranging breed, the Plymouth Rock chickens are in high demand and are used, most frequently, for those that require a certain level of egg laying production.
Make Room
The best way to keep these fine birds is to bear in mind that these fellows and ladies need a great deal of room in which to scratch around. These chickens will do very well in a confined space and a rather cramped coop but to really experience all that these lovely birds have to offer, you need to allow them to be well, themselves! A good rule of thumb is to allow each bird to have access to a few feet of turf or some other form of earthy landscape so that they can dig and scratch for worms and other such insects and this will make a happy bird and a very happy bird owner as well!
